Composition
The National Commission on Sustainable Development is a presidential committee established to review and deliberate key policies to effectively promote sustainable development effectively.
The Commission consists of up to 60 members, including ex officio and appointed members, with the chairperson selected from the private sector.
- (Appointed Members) Distinguished professionals with extensive knowledge and experience in sustainable development, appointed by the President for renewable two-year terms. At present, 26 private-sector commissioners from diverse backgrounds are serving on the Commission, including Chairperson Jyung Chyul-Young.
- (Ex Officio Members) Senior officials from 12 central government ministries and the chairpersons of 17 provincial and metropolitan sustainable development commissions. These include the Minister of Economy and Finance, the Minister of Education, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of the Interior and Safety, the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the Minister of Trade, Industry and Resources, the Minister of Health and Welfare, the Minister of Climate, Energy and Environment, the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, the Minister of the Office for Government Policy Coordination (Secretary-General), and the Minister of Data and Statistics.
Functions
- Formulate and revise a national basic strategy for sustainable development.
- Formulate and revise a central action plan for sustainable development.
- Consult on and coordinate central and local action plans.
- Examine the implementation of central action plans and provide policy opinions.
- Review statutes, regulations, and administrative plans, and notify the results of the review.
- Develop and disseminate national sustainable development indicators and conduct national sustainability assessment.
- Prepare and publish national sustainable development reports.
- Facilitate cooperation among interested parties.
- Disseminate information on sustainable development.
- Promote education and public awareness on sustainable development.
- Mediate social conflicts and facilitate cooperation with regard to sustainable development.
- Deliberate on matters prescribed by other or presidential decree, and advise the President on sustainable development.
